Service-Learning Grants

Bates has a long tradition of linking the liberal arts and the cultivation of good citizenship and concern for others. The College values service experiences not only for their benefits to society, but as important educational tools. The Center for Service-Learning assists students in securing service-learning internships, works with faculty members interested in integrating service-learning into their courses, and administers a number of service-learning grant programs for students and faculty.

During the academic year, students can receive support to help defray costs associated with service-learning projects undertaken for a course or unit through the Arthur Crafts Service Awards Fund.

In the summer, eligible students can participate in Community Work-Study Projects, funded by the College's federal work-study program. Fifteen students participated in these projects in 1998.

An endowment established by the Vincent Mulford Foundation supports three students engaged in social-issues research or a service-learning internship every summer.

Crafts Summer Grants also provide support for students engaged in service-learning internships or social-issues research. Three students received Crafts Summer Grants in 1998.
