Bates students can take advantage of a wide range of research,
service-learning, and on-the-job training opportunities funded by the
College and available through competitive grant programs. Support for these
efforts comes from many sources: federal, state, and private grants to
individual faculty members; foundation grants to the College; and
endowments established by alumnae/i, parents, foundations, and friends of
Bates who understand the unique value these opportunities offer students. Described on the pages that follow are the 1998 summer research, service-learning, and career-training projects funded by the College or overseen by Bates faculty members. Research programs support sixty-eight students and thirty-one faculty in sixteen academic disciplines. College funding for research is administered by the Office of the Dean of the Faculty. The Center for Service-Learning helps students arrange and secure funding for a variety of service-learning projects and internships with government agencies and nonprofits, locally, nationally, and internationally. Twenty-five students were involved in College-funded service-learning efforts in the summer of 1998. The Ladd Internship Program enables eighteen students to get valuable on-the-job work experience in a variety of companies, laboratories, and government agencies. Of the supervisors of Ladd Interns, eight are Bates alumnae/i or the parents of Bates students. The program is administered by the Office of Career Services. More information on specific research, service-learning, and career-training programs can be found at the Dean of the Faculty's Student Research web site.
