Winter Committees

Budget and Finance Advisory Committee
Chair: Professor Emily Kane (ekane@bates.edu)

President, ex officio; Dean of Faculty, ex officio; Treasurer, ex officio; 4 faculty members, 4 staff members, 3 students.

The committee reviews information, offers advice to the President and the administration, and communicates with the community concerning (1) the development of both annual and multi-year budgets and (2) general issues relating to the College’s finances and the economics of higher education.

Curriculum and Calendar Committee (CCC)
Chair: Professor John Strong (jstrong@bates.edu)

Registrar, ex officio; Librarian or Associate Librarian, ex officio; 4 faculty members (one from each of the following departments: Natural Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Interdisciplinary Program); 2 students.

The CCC reviews and approves curricular proposals that come within the structure of established educational policy and practice. The committee also prepares the annual academic calendar as well as reviews and approves class and examination schedules presented by the college registrar. Yet another field of responsibility of the CCC is approving interdisciplinary majors. In order to effectively address its many responsibilities, the committee meets on a weekly basis.

Educational Policy Committee (EPC)

Dean of the Faculty, ex officio; 6 faculty members; 3 students.

The EPC has the broad responsibility of reviewing the college’s educational policy, and the initiation of proposals to the Faculty for changes in policy. The EPC practically sets the framework for a lot of the work conducted in the Curriculum and Calendar Commitee (CCC).

First-Year Seminars and the Writing Workshop Committee
Chair: Professor Anne Dodd (adodd@bates.edu)

6 faculty members (at least one from each academic division); 2 students.

The First-Year Seminars and Writing Workshop Committee has five main responsibilities: to work with participating faculty in seeing that proposed seminars reflect the purposes of the First-Year Seminars Program; to present each year’s program to the Curriculum and Calendar Committee; to offer an annual evaluation of the program to the Educational Policy Committee; to consider, in consultation with the Dean of the Faculty, requests for exceptions; to supervise the Writing Workshop, and serve as an information resource on teaching writing.

The committee meets about five times in the fall semester and once a month in the winter semester. The work in the winter semester is to make sure there are sufficient First-year Seminars for the incoming class. The bulk of the committee’s work consists of reviewing proposals for new seminars to , for example, make certain they include an emphasis writing. The committee also discusses relevant policy issues.

Information Services Advisory Committee (ISAC)
Chair: Professor Todd Kahan (tkahan@bates.edu)

3 faculty members; 2 students; the Information Services Advisory Team, ex officio; 3 college administrators chosen by the Vice President of Academic Affairs in consultation with the ISAC Chair.

The ISAC advises the information services management team about matters related to computing and telecommunications services (e.g., wireless, bandwidth, email, software, etc.). In addition, this group provides advice prioritizing yearly capital budget expenditures associated with information services. The committee meets once every month to discuss these matters. The committee also aids in the review of plans and provides a forum to discuss problems and needs that should be addressed.

Student Conduct Committee (SCC)

5 full-time teaching faculty members; 5 students.

The SCC is responsible for making policy recommendations to the faculty regarding matters of student conduct, to make decisions in student conduct cases that may result in probation, suspension, dismissal, or other major penalty, and to handle all readmission cases for students dismissed for disciplinary reasons. The Student Committee on Committees appoints the committee’s student Co-Chair. See the SCC’s webpage for more info.

Admissions and Financial Aid Committee

The Admissions and Financial Aid Committee considers policy matters relative to the admission of new students and the granting of all forms of financial aid not specifically determined by other means. The committee's recommendations for policy change are submitted to the faculty for appropriate action.

Student members of the Admissions and Financial Aid Committee are excluded from an discussion or vote on cases involving individuals.

The Athletics Committee gives careful attention to all matters pertaining to non-curricular athletics, and serves as an advisory committee to the Physical Education Department on matters relating to non-curricular policy and practice.

The Honors Study Committee establishes standards and procedures for the granting of honors. Furthermore, the committee admits students to honor study upon recommendation of department chairs.

Library Committee

This committee sits as an advisory body to the librarian and is the committee of first referral in all matters concerning the library. Students on the Library Committee participate in discussions regarding improvements and changes to library equipment and policies. Furthermore, students on the Library Committee can bring relevant student concerns before the committee.

Off-Campus Study Committee
Chair: Professor Michael Jones (mjones@bates.edu)

This committee evaluates off-campus study programs other than those within the curriculum of the academic departments and to recommend them to the Committee on Educational Policy, establishes procedures for the selection of student applicants to such programs, and approves students for participation in programs other than those within the curriculum, including the junior year abroad.

Student members of the Off-Campus Study Committee are excluded from any discussion or vote on cases involving individuals.
