Your Current Course Reserves

To link to your Library course reserves from a web page, or from within Lyceum, the case-sensitive URL is formed as follows:

http://ladd.bates.edu/search/rName+Of+Your+Department+Course#

For example:

http://ladd.bates.edu/search/rAfrican+American+Studies+s20

Indexes and Databases

The Ladd Library subject guides contain suggestions for the most useful databases for individual subjects (see below). To provide a link to an index or datatbase that is not contained in the subject guide for your discipline, find it in the alphabetical list of Indexes & Databases then copy and paste the link directly onto your page. This will not work for all databases, as some require using the "save link" right click when mousing over the link. If you have difficulties, please contact a reference librarian.

Subject Guides

The reference staff has prepared subject guides to aid in library research. To add a link to a specific subject guide, find the subject guide on the alphabetical list. Select the subject guide for your discipline and copy and paste the URL from the navigation bar on the browser.

Online Articles

Creating links to online journal articles

A simple 'copy and paste' procedure is usually enough to directly link to articles in journals which the Library subscribes to. The online journals to which Bates subscribes tend to authenticate users based on the IP address of the computer making a request. On-campus users should be validated automatically. OffCampus users will be asked for a Bates user ID and password.
  • Navigate to the article (or the journal homepage, if you wish a link to the whole journal) using either the Ladd Library Catalog, library's list of Full Text Online Journals, or one of the library's Indexes/Databases
  • Copy the URL of the article from the navigation bar of your browser.
  • Paste the URL into your lYCEUM page or document.
  • JSTOR and EbscoHost databases are an exception (see instructions below). Lexis/Nexis does not allow direct links to articles.

Creating a persistent link from EbscoHost databases (Academic Search Premier, Communication & Mass Media Complete, etc.)

When you search EbscoHost databases, they generate a complicated URL based on your search strategy. These are usually not satisfactory to use as links. However, each article citation contains a "Persistent link to this record" field, which provides a short, stable, direct link to the citation and article. To access this link:

  • From the list of citations, select the title of the article. This brings up the database citation for the article.
  • Copy the URL from the "Persistent link to this record" field
  • Paste the URL into your Lyceum page or document

If you experience difficulties with this, contact either a reference libarian or a staff member in Ladd Library reserves for assitance.

JSTOR

In JSTOR, search for your article. From the list of citations, select, copy, and paste the text in the "Stable URL" field to create your link.

Electronic Images

There are many large repositories of copyright cleared images available on the internet which offer the possibility of adding or linking to visual material through your course website. Some suggestions are:

  • American Memory from the Library of Congress
  • Bodleian Library Digital Library Projects from the University of Oxford
  • Historical Maps Website from the University of Texas at Austin.

  • Media

To include audio or video components in your Lyceum course, please contact: Andrew White[awhite@bates.edu], Chris Schiff [cschiff@bates.edu], or Brenda Reynolds [breynold@bates.edu] for further information.
