Interlibrary Loan

When following a citation or just to browse for possibilities, be sure to make use of the easy access to other library collections.

User-initiated requests:
NExpress : Bowdoin, Colby, Middlebury, NorthEastern Univ., Vassar, Wellesley, and Williams College
MaineCat: Bowdoin, Colby, University of Maine system, and virtually all Maine libraries

In-depth research often requires materials not available here or as a user-initiated request. In these cases, we will search nationally, and even internationally at times, when you request an item through Interlibrary Loan.

Special Purchases

If you feel the library should acquire materials in your research area, please consult with the appropriate subject liaison . This does require planning, as most orders take some weeks to arrive and be processed.

Access to Other Research Libraries

Via the Web: Search WorldCat for a comprehensive look at what libraries worldwide have on your topic.

Via individual catalogs: Search Libweb to find and connect to the online catalogs of other libraries, both U.S. and abroad.

In Person: Some major research libraries and archives are closed to the general public. You can obtain a letter of introduction and intent from the College Librarian that may allow you use of such collections. Contact Gene Wiemers, ewiemers@abacus.bates.edu College Librarian for such a letter.

Lockers

Last but certainly not least, there are lockers for those doing thesis work. There are a limited number which are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis by the Circulation staff.

Research Tools

Besides RefWorks, there's LibX , a Firefox plug-in, you can download on your personal computer to make it easier to search for finding books, journal articles, and other library resources.
