RefWork

Bates students, faculty and staff can use RefWorks on or off campus to:

  • Automatically create bibliographies in all major styles (MLA, APA, Turabian, Chicago, etc.) in seconds
  • Organize citations for multiple research papers and projects
  • Add citations from online indexes/databases and library catalogs.

Logging into RefWorks:

Your Browser's Pop Up Blockers must be turned off to successfully import citations from databases!!! Use the TOOLS tab in your browser; go to OPTIONS then CONTENT.

WriteNCite on your own workstation:
Download WriteNCite from the tools tab in the RefWorks' toolbar.
(Mac Users Open the download with the stuffit application and install.)
Open both WriteNCite ( which will ask you to log into RefWorks) and Word

   Select Marked list.
   From the Marked List click Export.
   To do a direct export, select Export directly to RefWorks.
   The export opens RefWorks and automatically imports references.

 Mark records.
 Click Export Button at the bottom of the screen. A new window opens.
  Click tab Means of Retrieving Exports and choose to download.
  Click tab File Type and select DAT format
  Click Export.
  Your references will now be displayed in a new window. Select all references and copy using ctrl + c.
  Open RefWorks in a separate window, select references then import.
  Choose Import Filter: L'Année Philologique.
  Choose Import data from the Following Text.
  Paste (ctrl + v) into "Import data from the Following Text".
  Click Import.

Select Export to Reference software (right hand column)
This saves file to desktop.
Log in to RefWorks.
Select References/Import from the toolbar.
Select ISI as the datasource and BIOSIS as the database.
Browse to find the textfile saved. (uml.)
Click Import.

Select records and click Download.
Select Standard Download and click Go.
Select ASCII and Full Record as the Record Format and click on Go.
Using your browser's Save As function, navigate to the local drive and directory where you want to save the file.  The file will have a .gpb extension.
 Select Text as the file type.  Click Save.
Log in to RefWorks.
Select References/Import from the toolbar.
Select BooksInPrint as the data source and BooksInPrint (ASCII Full Record) as the database.
Browse to find the text file you saved to your computer.
Click Import.
