Requirements of a Federal Depository Library

  • Acquire,house, preserve, and provide access
  • Assist public in locating government information
  • Must mark all materials with depository stamp (signifying government property) and date of shipping list
  • 5 years growth space
  • Must have depository emblem on front door
  • Maintain core collection of certain titles
  • Documents Librarian who coordinates all depository activities
  • Adequate staffing to process materials and assist public
  • No signs or policies or physical barriers which would discourage or inhibit depository use or public access
  • Must maintain holdings records to the piece level
  • Make corrections to SuDoc numbers as issued in Technical Supplements
  • Open, process, and shelf materials within 10 days or less from receipt
  • Must have detailed procedures manual
  • Complete biennial survey every 2 years
  • Inspected every 5 years (last one July 11, 1996) moving to self-study, rather than on-site

    • Physical facilties
    • Public service
    • Cooperative efforts
