Creating Lists of Current Newspapers by Language

This page outlines steps used to create the original lists of periodicals/newspapers by language using the the program written by Jim Hart for Recently Cataloged Material. This procedure was used by the Systems and Catalog Librarian.

Note: Pages are now updated manually in Dreamweaver.

  1. Original list:
    • bcode2=s
    • and lang not eng
    • and bcode3=-
    • Sort by 245
  2. Sublist:
    • btsn, btsf, btsq
    • 008 pub stat=c
  3. Individual lists: lang= [] or 041 has []
    • fre
    • spa
    • chi
    • ger
    • rus
    • jpn
  4. Run a scat report on the sublist to compare numbers with individual lists.
  5. Output these elements from the sublist and from individual lists. Name them: newspapersAny, newspapersFrench, newspapersSpanish, etc.
    • 245 (title)
    • p (imprint)
    • 001 (oclc number)
  6. Change default settings according to instruction number 3.
  7. Put the lists in Library/resources/catalog/recent following instruction number 4.
  8. Edit the .out files. Change 245 to Title and IMPRINT to Imprint.
  9. Select the file.
  10. Run the report.
  11. Copy the html source into a new page, using newspaperstemplate.shtml. Name the files newspapersAny.shtml, newspapersFrench.shtml, etc. Edit the page headers by supplying the correct language (e.g., Current Chinese Newspapers and Periodicals).
  12. Check the links from the catalog to make sure the lists are working. Check some links from each list to make sure the links into the catalog are working.
