Historical Note

Harry Willison Rowe was born in Mercer, Maine, on November 13, 1887, to Willison and Penny Louisa (Groves) Rowe. In 1900, shortly after the death of his mother, Harry was sent to live with a family in Pittsfield, Maine, where he worked performing chores in the boarding house and farm they ran, and attended classes at Pittsfield Grammar School. Shortly afterward he attended Maine Central Institute, graduating in 1906. Between 1906 and 1908, when he entered Bates College, Rowe served as the principal for the Troy High School, as well as serving as pastor to the Baptist Churches in Eastbrook and Waltham, Maine. While at Bates, one of Rowe's significant activities was debating, and he was generally known as one of the best speakers in his class. During this time, he also served as the pastor at the Baptist Church in Lisbon Falls for three years.

Following graduation in 1912, Rowe worked as the field secretary for the Maine Christian Endeavor society until 1914, when he was hired as the secretary to the Student YMCA at Bates, beginning 44 years of service to the school. Rowe also served as Bursar, Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds, Alumni Secretary, Dean of Admission for Men, Assistant to the President, and in 1946 was appointed to be Bates' first Dean of Faculty, which he held until his retirement in 1958. Rowe also created and for a time edited the Bates alumni magazine, 'The Alumnus.' In addition to his work at Bates, Rowe also served as a trustee to the Maine Central Institute, joined the Lewiston-Auburn Rotary Club along with a number of other service, social, and historical organizations, and took the time to assist and mentor many Bates students, staff, and faculty. Upon his retirement, Rowe was named Dean emeritus and became the unofficial Bates College historian and archivist, a position he used to begin collecting historical material on Bates, and which formed the basis for the College records in the Muskie Archives today. He married Hope Chandler in 1913, and they had three children together, Ruth, Robert, and Esther. Harry Rowe passed away in Lewiston on December 23, 1980.

Series Description

MC071/01: Bates records, 1918-1978 , Bulk dates: 1935-1958
2 linear feet
Scope and Content Note
These files pertain to Rowe's employment at Bates College, as Alumni and YMCA Secretary, Bursar, Assistant to the President, and Dean of the Faculty. Most of the records seem to pertain to his position as Dean, but as the files were orginally kept (and received by the Archives) together without apparent division by job title, they have been arranged together in a similar manner. (Exception: see Scope/Content note in collection CA 02.02.) In addition, some items in this series date after Rowe's retirement from Bates in 1958; this material has been retained in the order received by the Archives, and probably as Rowe filed it.
Organization and Arrangement
The records in this series are arranged alphabetically by folder title.

Scope and Content Note
This series contains records kept by Rowe pertaining to his activities and researches as the unofficial Bates historian and archivist. Most of the records date to the period after his retirement, but there are a number of documents from before 1958, as Rowe long had an interest in the history of the College. Most of the files contain correspondence, clippings, and other items that cover specific topics on the history of Bates, its founders, its early history, and its faculty and alums. In addition, there are also some files pertaining to Rowe's own history with Bates, notably folders on his graduating class of 1912, and a folder on the commemoration ceremony held before his retirement, titled "A Day for Harry."
Organization and Arrangement
The files in this series are arrange alphabetically by folder title, with a separate sub-series relating to particular Bates Alumni at the end of the series (these can be found in Box 4).

Scope and Content Note
This series contains a wide variety of material of personal nature, that documents many of Rowe's activities outside of his Bates work. The largest portion of this series is the correspondence files, arranged alphabetically by correspondent. Most letters are filed together by first letter of the correspondent's last name, but a few individuals have been given their own folder due to a large volume of material or to the relative importance of the correspondent. There are also a number of correspondence files arranged by subject, that follow the correspondence from individuals. Another major portion of this series is Rowe's researches into family history, as he traced his early American and European ancestors. These folders are arranged alphabetically by family name, and subsequently with the heading 'Genealogy' to indicate a more general set of researches. There are also files on his research into Maine and United States history, his memberships in several fraternal and social organizations, and several files of material from his Bates College and secondary school days.
Organization and Arrangement
Primarily alphabetical by name or subject. For additional information, see the series description above.

MC071/04: Scrapbooks, 1908-1981
1 manuscript box; 3 oversize boxes
Scope and Content Note
This series contains four scrapbooks, only one of which appears to have been put together by Rowe himself. The first documents his student years at Bates, and includes photographs, clippings, letters, programs, brochures, and numerous artifacts from the period 1908-1912. Included in the back cover is a button from his 40th reunion in 1952. The next two (disbound) scrapbooks were apparently put together for or after his memorial service in 1980, which contains pictures, clippings and other items from his career and service activities, as well as letters of condolence to his daughter Ruth Rowe Wilson. The final scrapbook contains pictures of the campus and student activities at H.P.T. College in Nasik, India, circa 1960. It is not known who put together the last item, nor how it came into Rowe's possession.
