Historical Note

The Cobb Divinity School was an training institute for Freewill Baptist Ministers, and was sponsored by Bates College. It was known simply as the Theological School from its creation until 1887, when it was renamed. The Divinity School existed from 1870 until 1908, when it was disbanded and its faculty and selected courses were integrated into the college. The School was housed in Roger Williams Hall.

Scope and Content Note
This series contains the annual catalogs for the School. For the year 1893-1894, no separate catalog was published for Cobb; instead, catalog material was published in an issue of "Our Dayspring," a Freewill Baptist magazine. In addition, there is a catalog from 1868 for the Maine State Seminary, prior to the name becoming Cobb Divinity School. Catalogs prior to 1892-93 were published as a part of the Bates College Catalog, which can be found in collection CA 02.01.

Scope and Content Note
This series contains a variety of records documenting some of the activities of the Divinity School between 1873 and 1908. Most significant are the three faculty meeting notebooks, which contain handwritten notes about meetings, grades, student assessments, and other topics. The hymnbook is titled "Best Hymns," by Elisha A. Hoffman, and was used by the students of the divinity school.
