Scope and Content Note

These records contain correspondence, memoranda, programs, reports, brochures, and clippings. Although the records cover a wide variety of topics, most of the folders concern fundraising efforts and other financial matters pertaining to Bates College. The bulk of the fundraising/financial items are from the Chase and Gray administrations, but there is some material from the Phillips era as well. It is likely that most of the files came from Harry Rowe, who served as Assistant from 1924 to 1956; a number of the folders also contain typewritten notes from Rowe, written between 1956 and 1958.

Organization and Arrangement

The records are arranged into two series: General Administrative records and Wills and Gifts. The files under each series are then arranged alphabetically by folder title. See each series note for more detailed information.

Note that there may be some correlation to records in the manuscript collection MC-071, Harry Rowe Papers. Since the records in MC-071 and in this collection were transferred to the Archives in multiple accessions, it was difficult to determine the exact provenance of the files within each; therefore the records in each collection reflect the nature of their transfer to the Archives, and not necessarily how the documents were originally filed.

Series Description

CA02.02/01: General Administrative, 1878-1968
3 manuscript boxes
Scope and Content Note
Contains correspondence, memoranda, brochures, and reports. This series covers a variety of financial and campus matters. Many of the folders contain material on fundraising, scholarships, and the college's financial assets. Included in this group are the 'General Education Board' folder, which covers that groups financial appropriations to Bates, and the 'Marts and Lundy Report,' a study made of the college's financial status and fundraising prospects. The 'Million Dollar Fund' folder also contains copies of the "Million Dollar News" newsletter.
Some of the non-fiscal files include material on the land donated for Garcelon Field and material on other gifts to Bates including several Communion service settings, the Merrill telescope, and a house at 128 Sabattus Street. The several files on Commencement, Class Day, and Ivy Day, consist mostly of reports from students and faculty about activities and outings during those events.
