Audio
Materials
Audiovisual reserve requests should be directed to
Brenda Reynolds, 207.786.6267, in
the Audio Video Area.
Preparation of excerpts of sound recordings for course reserves is time
intensive process. Audio course reserves should be made as early as
possible, and well before the deadline for print materials.
The provisions of the U.S. copyright law governing fair use by libraries
(Title 17, Sections 107, 108 and 110 United States Code) are different
from the provisions governing classroom use. Only small portions of any
work may be copied for reserves. The Library must be in possession of a
legally obtained sound or visual recording to distribute reserve copies.
For this reason, the Library cannot and will not distribute copies of home
recordings that have been "captured" from broadcast or in any other way
duplicated.
Videos and sound recordings needed for reserve and not yet
owned by the Library can be purchased by contacting your Liaison, or fill out an electronic
order form.
Faculty members who wish to integrate audio reserves into Lyceum, our Course Management System,
should immediately contact Brenda Reynolds. Like other audio reserves,
online reserves require time and planning to prepare. Please allow for
this by making your requests as early as possible.
Library Owned
Books
You may supply the library with a list of the titles and call numbers of
the
books you want on reserve or you may submit the books yourself. Blank
request
forms are available at Circulation or the online
request form may be used.
Library
Purchase for Reserve
The Library can purchase a copy of the book that will be used as primary
reading in your class if the book is appropriate for the library
collection.
Requests for purchase should be made as early as possible, preferably at
least eight weeks prior to the start of the semester. Contact your
Liaison to request the purchase of materials or
fill out an
electronic order
form.
Keep in mind that purchasing books for reserve when an order has been
placed for
the
same material through the bookstore creates overstock. Requests for
these
materials should only be made if insufficient quantities of the book are
available through the bookstore.
There are instances in which the Library will purchase multiple
copies of
books for reserve. If the Library is to order multiple copies, the
following
guidelines should be met: The book should contain more than one chapter
of
required reading for the class. The material should be something that
the
instructor plans to use for more than one semester. The number of copies
ordered will correspond to the number of students enrolled in the class.
One
copy should be sufficient for a class of up to 20 students. Two copies
should
suffice for a class of up to 40 and three copies should be adequate for
a
class of up to 60.
Required textbooks for a course are generally not purchased for
reserve.
If the Library already owns a copy of a textbook or if a Liaison decides
to
buy a copy, these can be placed on reserve. You may also place your own
personal copy of a textbook on reserve.
Personal Copies of Books
Bring personal copies of books to the Circulation desk. We caution that
some
amount of wear and tear should be expected when the books are on
reserve. The
library does not accept responsibility for damage to personal materials
or
stolen materials.
Linking to Online Resources
Many journal articles are available on licensed Ladd Library databases.
Links
to online reserve readings can be made through the Course Reserve lists
in
the Library Catalog. Provide library staff with complete citations to
the
required readings through the online
request form, and we'll have everything ready by the first days of
class.
Library staff will search the online databases for all articles
submitted
for reserve in paper form. Links will be placed in the Course Reserve
Lists
for all available articles.
Photocopied Materials
Submit photocopied materials to the Circulation Desk. If the article is
from
a library-owned periodical, we ask that you or your teaching assistant
photocopy the article(s) in the library; periodicals do not circulate.
If
necessary, the entire issue or bound volume may be placed on reserve.
Materials will not be placed on reserve unless proper source
acknowledgement
is clearly printed on the first page. Please contact Jeff Kazin at
786-8284 if
you have any questions.
Copyright
Policy
All materials brought to the Ladd Library Circulation Department for
reserve
must meet the "fair use" standard as outlined by the Copyright
Law
of the United
States
(Title 17 of the United States Code).
Ladd Library interprets these guidelines in the following way:
- Up to 5 copies
(or up
to 10 for a large class) of one excerpt from a published work will
be
placed on reserve. Each copy must have source and copyright
acknowledgement clearly printed on the front page.
- one chapter from
a
book
- one article or
short
work from an anthology
- a chart, graph,
diagram, drawing, cartoon or picture from a book, periodical, or
newspaper
- not more than
three
articles from one issue of a periodical
- Photocopied
materials
may not be placed on reserve every semester without seeking
permission.
- The same
materials may
not be used for more than one course.
- Faculty members
should
not repeatedly photocopy excerpts from one periodical or author
without
seeking permission.
Photocopies exceeding fair use will be placed on
reserve only
if permission is obtained from the publisher. Faculty who need
to obtain copyright permission should contact Jeff Kazin at
ext. 8482 as soon as
possible. Copyright clearance for some items may take several
months.

Copyright Clearance
Faculty who need to
obtain
copyright permission should contact Office Services as soon as
possible. Copyright clearance for some items may take as long
as several months. Contact Jeff Kazin at ext. 8482 for more
information.
Items from Other Libraries
It is against general library ethics and the Interlibrary Loan Code to
place
materials from other libraries on reserve. This includes books, journal
articles or video and soundrecordings requested through Interlibrary Loan, MaineCat, Nexpress, as well as items you have directly checked out from other
libraries.
Statistics
The automated library system tracks the number of times individual
reserves
have been checked out. These statistics are e-mailed to you at the end
of
each semester. They are also available for review throughout the
semester at
Circulation. We cannot report statistics for e-reserves at this time.
Removing Items from Reserve
At the end of each semester, all reserve items are removed from the
course
lists and returned to the library stacks. Materials belonging to faculty
members are returned via campus mail.
