Recall and Hold Policy

Library patrons may recall materials that are checked out to other patrons.

Before placing a hold, or recall, search for an available copy in the Nexpress and MaineCat databases. Items are typically delivered within two or three days from these libraries. Bates items will not be recalled, or placed on hold, if a copy is available at Nexpress or MaineCat.

When a copy is not available from either of these resources, use one of two options on the Recall and Hold Form.

  • Recall - Choose; "Recall item from current user and notify me when it is returned." The recall changes the due date for the original borrower.
    • The original borrower is granted a minimum two week loan.
    • The original borrower is required to return the recalled item within 4 days if the item has been in possession for more than the two week minimum.
    • Material needed for course reserve may be recalled and due immediately.
    • When a recall is placed a notice is sent informing the patron of the new due date. Please respect the needs of other library users and return recalled items by the new due date.

  • Hold - Choose; "Notify me when a copy is returned without being recalled from current user". The hold does not change the due date, it simply ensures that the item may not be renewed by the original borrower.

  • Fines and Consequences - Further borrowing by patrons with overdue recalled items is blocked until the recalled item is returned. Fines increase to $2.25 per day for overdue, recalled items.
