Collections The sound recordings and videos are located in the Audio Video Area, which keeps the same hours as the rest of the building. Scores and books on music are located in direct proximity to the recordings. The periodicals are interfiled with all others, alphabetically by title and unclassed, on the ground floor. Micromedia related to music is also interfiled, and is on the ground floor. The reference works are located on the main floor, interfilled with the rest of the reference materials. Second copies of some heavily used reference works such as the New Grove Dictionary of Music, the Harvard Dictionary of Music, and Heyer are shelved in Audio. The Music Department also has some reference works. Multimedia CDs are interfiled with others, behind the circulation desk, but can be played on a workstation in Audio. Strengths of collection include popular music (jazz in particular), American music, music since 1950 and opera, musicals, dance, rock, and world music videos. Two important recently acquired collections are manuscripts, scores, letters, and monographs from Alice Swanson Esty, Bates Class of 1925, concentrating on French music, art, and poetry of Paris from the 1940's to the 1960's and a collection of monographs, scores, manuscripts and other memorabilia from Frank Glazer, pianist, and Artist-in-Residence at Bates for the past 15 years.
