Rankings?

Although the rankings are controversial, and the methodology changes annually, U.S. News and World Report has ranked Bates as number 22 among the top 218 national liberal arts colleges for 2001-2002 in its America's Best Colleges issue. Bates was also ranked 19th in "selectivity", 20th in "graduation and retention", and 12th in the "alumni giving" category.

Kaplan recently surveyed guidance counselors in public and private high schools across the country to determine which colleges they recommend to their students and why. The Kaplan guide cited special recognition to Bates as an outstanding school in the following categories:

In 2000, Bates was ranked by Yahoo! Internet Life magazine as the 3rd "most wired" liberal arts colleges in the country.

Bates is profiled as a "college of excellence" in The Hidden Ivies: Thirty Colleges of Excellence, by Howard Greene, M.A, M.Ed. and Matthew Greene, Ph.D., published by HarperCollins, 2000.
