IM Racquetball

Competitive League:    Mondays 8-10 pm
Recreational League:    Wednesdays 8-10 pm

League Begins:     Sept. 14 & 16

Schedule.

Location:  Merrill Gym Racquet Courts

BASIC RULES:

1.   Match: the best 3 out of 5 games. Each game is played to 10 points and only a 1 point margin needed for victory.

2.   Scoring:
a point can only be scored by the server. If the server does not win the rally, no points awarded and the opponent gets the right to serve.

3.   Server:
the server must stand within the 2 black lines to serve. No part of either foot may extend beyond either line of the service zone. Stepping on the line (but not beyond it) is permitted. Server must remain in the service zone until the served ball passes short line. Violations are called "foot faults."

To serve, the server drops the ball to the floor and after the 1st bounce in the service zone, be struck by the server's racquet so that it hits the front wall first and on the rebound hits the floor back of the short line, either with or without touching one of the side walls (it may NOT touch 2 side walls before bouncing).

Doubles Serve: Only the first server serves the first time up and continues to serve first throughout the game. When the first server is out -- the side is out. Thereafter both payers on each side shall serve until a hand-out (side-out) occurs. It is not necessary for the server to alternate serves to their opponents.

*Partner's Position. On each serve, the server's partner shall stand erect with his back to the side wall and with both feet on the floor within the service box until the served ball passes the short line. Violations are called "foot faults."

4.   Receiving:  a return is deemed to be made at the instant the ball touches the racquet of the player making the return.

To make a good return of a service or of a subsequent return, the ball must be struck on the volley or before it has touched the floor twice and reach the front wall on the fly. The ball may touch any wall or walls within the court before or after reaching the front wall. On any return the ball may be struck only once. It may not be "carried" or "double-hit".

If the receiver fails to make a good return of a good service, the server wins the point. If the receiver makes a good return of a service, the players shall alternate making returns until one player fails to make a good return. If the server fails to make a good return, he/she loses the serve and the opponent now serves.

5. Right to Play Ball:
immediately after striking the ball a player must get out of an opponent's way and must:

1) give an opponent a fair view of the ball.
2) give an opponent a fair opportunity to get to the ball.
3) allow an opponent to play the ball to any part of the front wall or either side.

If the player obstructs the ability of the opponent to play the ball, then a replay is called.

6. Miscellaneous:

A. If a ball in play touches either player, the player it touches loses the rally.
B. Players may check out racquets and eyewear at Front Desk before game. Balls will be provided.
C. Players will make their own calls using the "honor system"; heavily disputed calls will be replayed.

Sportsmanship:

If a player is disqualified for any unsportsman-like act, he/she will be suspended from league play immediately. If upon review the player is reinstated to the league, the matches scheduled during suspension will be recorded as forfeits/losses.

Any disputes are to be discussed and resolved by parties involved at the site. Any further discussion should be directed to the IM Director immediately following the game by email <mgraef@bates.edu>.
