Some Sample Perseus Projects
Contents:
Word searches are a great way to get started on a project. The English word search in Perseus will tell you all the Greek words in the unabridged Liddel-Scott Lexicon (9th ed.) and in the Middle Liddell that have a given word (which you specify) in their English definitions. From there, you can select Greek words on the list to look up in the lexicon (to see the full definition), and go on to view ancient Greek texts (in either English or Greek) which use those words.
For example: those interested in the impact of the ancient Greek economy on religion or daily life, you might try a word search for the word, "wealth." Would you have expected to find 55 words in Greek with the word wealth in their definitions? You can conduct a word search by going to the Perseus WWW Home Page, selecting "Texts" and then English-Greek Word Search, or try this example right here by selecting Greek words whose definitions contain "wealth"
An assigned project in the Ancient Greek Religion course at Bates is to do a word search for the word, altar, and to select one type of altar for a group research project. You can begin that project in the same way, by selecting here a search for Greek words whose definitions contain "altar"
When you get the search results, you may
- get the meaning of any particular word in the search results by clicking on the link "LS [number]" immediately following the transliterated Greek word. (This link gives you the definition found in the Liddell-Scott (LS) Greek-English Lexicon.)
- choose "frequencies" for any particular word to see what authors use that word, how many times they use it, and statistically how large the word looms in their total vocabulary.
- choose "search" for any particular word in order to get a list of authors and the precise passages in their works where the word occurs. You can then click on any of these passages to see that particular text.
- choose instead (from the top of the list of words in the search results) "all of the occurrences" or "frequency of these words in Perseus" if you want to see the same information for all of the words in the search results.
