Starting Up Perseus 2.0 at Bates

Perseus 2.0 is available on public networked Macs in If you want to use it on your personal computer, and it is networked from your dormitory room, you must first remove any obsolete Perseus 1.0 files from your machine (including the aliases in your Bates Menu folder), since the two versions of Perseus are not compatible.
STEP 1: Log into Perseus 2 on the Campus Network using the Chooser.

How to do it:
  1. On any public Macintosh in Hathorn Hall's 3rd Floor Lounge: click & hold on the Apple Menu, drag mouse down to select "Perseus." Select all four Perseus 2.0 disks and the Perseus Player, then double click on them to start Perseus. If you open them individually, open the disks before opening the Perseus Player.

On any personal Macintosh connected to the Campus Network: you may set up your computer to function like the computers in Hathorn 3rd Floor Lounge by the following steps: Activate the Chooser. In the Chooser dialog box, select "Appleshare" in the upper left quadrant, the "Backbone" zone in the lower left quadrant, and the server called "daffy" in the upper right quadrant by clicking on them (see the illustration below), then click on the "O.K." button.

The login dialog box now pops up. Log in at the prompt as "Guest" by clicking the "Guest" button. The dialogue box will now appear as in the illustration below. Click "OK".

  2. The files selection box now pops up, which looks like this:

Select "Perseus Disk 1" by clicking ONCE on it, then "Perseus Disks 2-4" by shift-clicking once on each of them. When all four disks are selected, then click on the "O.K." button.

If you want your computer to open the Perseus files automatically from now on whenever it starts up connected to the campus network, check the boxes to the right of each disk, as illustrated above.

  3. The icons for the Perseus 2.0 Disks 1 - 4 on the College Network will now appear on your screen. They look like this:

If you double click on any of these icons, you will be looking at folders and Hypercard Stacks containing Perseus files -- texts, images, maps, etc.

Step 2: Activate the Perseus 2.0 Player.

the Perseus Player is the "front end" program or "Gateway" for Perseus 2.0. It resides in the Macintosh and enables it to access the Perseus 2 files which you logged into in Step 1.

How to do it:
  1. On any networked public Macintosh in Bates College laboratories or the Ladd Library: if you did not open the Perseus Player in Step 1, click & hold on the Apple Menu, drag mouse down to select "Perseus." Then select the Perseus Player, and double click on it to bring up the Perseus Gateway.

On personal Macintoshes that are networked from Bates dormitory rooms: you must install the Perseus 2.0 Player. You will find the Perseus 2.0 Installer in Perseus Disk 1, which you just logged into in Step 1. Double-click on the icon for Perseus Disk 1 to open it. In the following illustration, you can see the Perseus Installer in the window for Perseus Disk 1 (the lowest window). To install, follow the instructions given below the illustration. You might want to print up these instructions (by typing "apple-p," i.e., "command-p" or by selecting "Print" in the Bar menu under "File"), since the installation process may temporarily cover your WWW browser and prevent you from reading these instructions.

    1. To begin the installation, double-click on the icon of the Perseus Installer (you can see it in the "Perseus Disk 1" window -- the lowest window -- in the illustration above).

NOTE: If at any time you want to stop the installation, type apple-Q, (i.e., "command-Q") to turn off the installer.

    2. click on the installation button labelled "standard installation" (partially visible in the above illustration). Then, in response to the query, "Do you want to create a new folder for Perseus?" click on the "Yes" button.

    3. In the dialogue box which now appears, click and hold on the small box immediately below the question, "Where do you want the Perseus Folder?," select "desktop," then select your hard drive (or navigate to the file of your choice) visible in the large window of available disks and files by clicking ONCE on your choices. Finally, click on the button labelled Select "[file title]" (This button is located immediately below the large window showing the available disks and files). The installation will be completed in a few seconds.

  2. Open the newly created folder entitled, "Perseus 2.0" then open the internal folder entitled "Local Stacks." To begin Perseus, double click on the Hypercard Stack entitled "Perseus Player."

NOTE: if you want to be able to start up Perseus from the Apple Menu on your personal machine, in the same way that the public macintoshes work, make an alias of this Hypercard Stack ("Perseus Player") and place the alias in your Apple Menu Folder.

The Apple Menu Folder is located in the System Folder on your hard drive. To make an alias of it, select it by clicking ONCE on it, then go to the File menu in the bar menu at the top of your screen, and select "make alias.")

The PERSEUS 2 GATEWAY will now appear on your screen, followed by the NAVIGATOR, a bar with a temple and several kinds of arrows on it which will appear floating over the Perseus Gateway. Drag the navigator to the edge of your screen, out of the way. The Perseus 2 Gateway looks like this:

USEFUL TIP: to make your machine work like the public Macintoshes, eliminating all of the above steps the next time you want to use Perseus, make an alias of the Perseus Disk icons ("Perseus Disk 1," "Perseus Disk 2" ) and place these aliases in your Apple Menu File as described above. From then on, you can start up the Perseus 2 files simply by clicking on these aliases in the Apple menu. As on public Macintoshes, you should start up these disks before starting up the Perseus Player.

  3. On the Perseus Gateway, notice that in the upper 2 zones are 7 icons representing the Major Divisions of Perseus 2:

You can enter any of these resources by either of the following ways:

    1. From the Perseus Gateway: click on the icon for the desired division
    2. From the Bar Menu (at the top of your screen): select the appropriate division under "LINKS"

You may now advance to the tutorials for the various divisions and tools of Perseus 2:

    1. Historical Overview
    2. Essays and Catalogs
    3. Tools & References
    4. Art & Archaeology
    5. Atlas
    6. Primary Texts (i.e., editions of classical Greek literature)
