Where and How to Access Perseus on the Campus Network

Perseus 2.0, which was beta tested at Bates, is available on the Bates Campus network, and may be accessed from any Macintosh computer which is directly connected to the campus network, including:

If you are off campus and linked to the College by a modem and PPP account, you cannot access Perseus 1 or Perseus 2, but you can access Perseus on the World Wide Web. the WWW Perseus offers the added advantage that it can be run from any platform (PC, Mac, or other), but offers a very limited number of images of museum-owned vases and sculptures.

    ID and Log-In Procedures

In order to run Perseus 2.0, you know have your password. If you do not know it, contact the Bates College INformation Services Help Desk (Pettigrew ground floor, lower level, or tel. 786-8222). In a pinch, you might get a friend or room mate to log in for you.

Log-in procedures are explained in the Tutorial Perseus 2.0.

Installation of the Bates Menu on Personal Macintosh Computers

In order to run Perseus from the Campus Network on your personal Macintosh, you should first have the Bates Menu installed. Access to the Perseus Player (Perseus 2 operating program), as well as access to other College-supported programs which are run from the Campus Network, needs nothing more than the click of your mouse via the Bates Menu, bypassing multiple network logins via the Chooser. Contact the BCIS Help Desk (tel. 786-8222) for information or to arrange for installation of the Bates Menu on your personal Macintosh.

    Using Hypercard with Perseus

Perseus 2.0 is based on HyperCard® and is incompatible with HyperCard Player. If you are using Perseus on a personal computer, you should remove any previously acquired copies of HyperCard Player from your computer.

HyperCard Player is a very limited version of HyperCard which used to be included with simpler HyperCard-based programs. One or more copies of it may be hanging around in your computer without your knowing it, so you should search for it if in doubt. (Use the search command -- "command-F" -- to search for HyperCard Player)
You do not need to have HyperCard installed on your personal computer to run Perseus. If your machine is connected to the Campus Network and the Bates Menu has been installed on it, Perseus will automatically run HyperCard from the Campus Network.
