Perseus at Bates

What is Perseus?

Perseus is an amazingly rich resource for the study of classical antiquity. It includes thousands of images of classical Greek art and architecture, texts in Greek with English translations of classical Greek authors, an encyclopedia, the Liddell-Scott Greek-English lexicon, thousands of pictures of archaeological sites and an atlas, and research tools and bibliographies. All of this is organized so that you can access pictures, maps, or encyclopedia articles to illustrate texts you are reading, find definitions of unfamiliar technical terms that you run across when reading descriptions of ancient Greek vases, and pursue your interests in classical antiquity in any way you choose.

Perseus is a treasure for students. It will help you find, research and organize paper topics. It makes it possible for people who do not know Greek to use Greek. For example, you can research topics by specifying Greek terms, which Perseus identifies (with meanings) and searches for you even though you initiate your search in English.

Perseus at Bates

Bates College is a beta-testing institution for Perseus. Students and faculty at Bates can access Perseus in two ways:
