Bates College Women's Cross Country

Adelia Myrick '99  - Kodiak, Alaska

Adelia Myrick '99 Adelia has been the top finisher for Bates in all but her first collegiate competition. She led the team in qualifying for the 1995 NCAA National Cross Country Championship and qualified as an individual in 1996 along with teammate Abby Phelps. So far in 1997, Myrick has won the State of Maine Championship, finished second in one other race and third in two others. Adelia finished sixth at the 1996 New England Qualifying meet. In Illinois at the NCAA Championship meet, Adelia surprised many with her 15th-place finish. She was the first finisher from New England and ran a personal best 18:17 on the 5K course, making her the third woman Bates cross country history to earn All-America honors.For the second straight year, Adelia earned All-State, All-NESCAC and All-New England honors. Adelia participates in track with personal bests of 2:20 for 800m, 4:44.27 for 1500m, and 10:52.56 for 3000m. She shares the school record for 1000m at 3:02.57 She qualified and competed in the 1996 NCAA Indoor Track Championship in the 1500m. Majoring in Russian and English, Adelia maintains a 3.7 GPA and spent short term 1996 studying in Russia, where she will return in the Spring of 1998.
 
 

Abigail Phelps '98  - Derry, N.H.

Abigail Phelps '98Abby's performances improved steadily throughout the season, establishing her as one of the top Division III runners in New England. She set a personal record of 18:54 for 5K and earned All-NESCAC second team honors. Early in the season she set her goal on a return trip to the NCAA Championship. A strong ninth-place finish among the 240 runners at the qualifying meet gave Abby the opportunity to once again compete at the NCAA Championship meet, where she tied her 5K personal record and finished 56th of 184 runners. A strong team leader, Abby is captain-elect of the 1997 squad. Abby is a Residence Coordinator. Abby will be competing in the 3000-, 5000- and 10000-meter runs in track , with the goal of once again qualifying for Nationals. She has personal bests in track of 5:01.2 in the 1500m, 10:46.57 in the   3000m, 19:20.03 for 5000m and 40:10.2 for 10,000m. Abby was the 1997 Maine State Champion for 3000m in indoor track.  Abby majors in English with a secondary concentration in French. 
 
 
 

Kim Walker '98 - Hampton, N.H.

Kim Walker '98Kim is participating in her second season of cross country. An elected co-captain she made a big impact her first season on the team. A talented and determined athlete she was a consistant top 7 finisher her junior year and now has established herself as the #3 runner on the team. Her personal best for a 5K course is 19:40 . Her best performances in track include the 3000M in 10:26.71, 1500m in 4:57.50, and 1000m in 3:12.80. Kim ran track and played soccer at Winnacunnet High Shool in New Hampshire. She is an honors student majoring in both English and Women's Studies and served as a Junior Advisor. 
 





 

Erika Cohen '98 - Sharon, Mass.
Erika Cohen '98Erika Cohen has steadily improved each season. She missed her sophomore cross country  season as a result of injuries suffered in a car accident. After extensive physical therapy, Erika returned to the team  recording personal bests in both cross country and track. Erika is expected to be one of the top seven runners on the team again this season. She has a personal best of 20:18 for a 5k course and 20:15.94 for 5000m on the track. Erika is an honors student majoring in English  with a concentration in creative writing. She spent the spring semester of her junior year in Norwich, England at the University of East Anglia at the Institute for Creative Writing. Erika is a graduate of Thayer Academy in Massachusetts and works as a Grant Writing and Research Intern in the Bates College Development Office.
 






 

Lauren Nally '99 - South Dennis, Mass.
Lauren Nally '99 Lauren has again established herself as a top 7 runner for the Bates finishing fifth for the team at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational earlier in the season. Her personal best for a 5K course is 20:18 established this season. Her best performaces in track include 3:18.73 for 1000m, and 20:18 for 5000m. Lauren attended Dennis-Yarmouth High School where she participated in cross country and track. Lauren majors in Biology.








Jessica Young '00 -Thetford, Vt.
Jessica Young '00 Jess is running cross country for the first time. An accomplished alpine skiier she found immediate success in her new sport by placing fifth for Bates in her first ever cross country meet. Jess has a personal record of 20:12 for a 5K course and has run 11:29.07 for 3000m on the track. A graduate of Thetford Academy, Jess is a double major in Studio Art and Math. She  lives in the Community Service house at Bates and is training a black labrador puppy for future work as a seeing eye dog.








Kristine Oelberger '01 - Stow, Mass.
Kristine Oelberger '99  Kristine has made an immediate impact on the team finishing among the top five in three of her first four races. Kristine has a pesonal best of 20:04 on a 5k course established earlier this season.  Kristine competed in both cross country and track at Nashoba Regional High School where she posted a personal best of 2:26 for 800m and Kristine is certainly someone to watch this season.
  










Ellen Humphrey '01 - Lexington, Mass.
Ellen Humphrey '01  Ellen has been making steady improvement throughout the season finishing fifth for the team as the Umass Dartmouth Invitational. She has a personal best for a 5k course of 20:19. In track she has run 5:25 for the mile and 2:25 for the 800m. She competed in track and cross country at Lexington High School and is planning to major in Economics.
