WOMEN'S X-COUNTRY TAKES THIRD AT STATES

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bates College women's cross-country matched their 2000 performance with a third-place finish at the State of Maine championships held at Bowdoin College. The host Polar Bears broke Colby's three-year streak of winning the State of Maine title with 27 points.The White Mules took second with 55 and Bates was close behind in third with 65.

Sophomore Julie Dutton (Londonderry, N.H.) earned All-State honors for the first time, placing fourth with a time of 19:28 in a very aggressive race. Junior Kelly Puglisi (Scotia, N.Y.) narrowly missed joining Dutton on the All-Maine team, taking eighth place with a time of 19:56, just four seconds out of the honor. Sophomore Jessica Gagne-Hall (Manchester, N.H.) ran in 12th place for much of the race, but a good final mile edged her into 11th by three seconds witha time of 20:03. Beth Pagnotta (Hoosket, N.H.) was the fourth Bobcat among the top 20 finishers with a time of 20:20. First-year runners Catherine Creswell (Portland, Ore.) and Penny Christo (Forestdale, Mass.), along with senior captain Rebecca Hakala (Sanford, Maine) rounded out the Bates scoring.
