WOMEN'S X-COUNTRY OPENS SEASON WITH VICTORY AT SMITH

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- For the second year in a row, the Bates College women's cross country team won its season-opening meet, as the Bobcats placed 10 runners among the top 24 finishers to capture the Smith College Invitational by 15 points over second-place Coast Guard.

Sophomore Julie Dutton (Londonderry, N.H.) had one of her best collegiate finishes, taking third place with a time of 20:28. Junior Kelly Puglisi (Scotia, N.Y.), and sophomores Beth Pagnotta (Hoosket, N.H.) and Jessica Gagne-Hall (Manchester, N.H.) finished within 10 seconds of each other in seventh through ninth places. First-year runner Penny Christo (Forestdale, Mass.) rounded out the Bates scoring by finishing in 12th place with a time of 21:39, 10 seconds ahead of classmate Catherine Creswell (Portland, Ore.) in 13th.
