WOMEN'S X-COUNTRY TAKES 10TH AT NESCACS

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Facing the toughest conference competition in the nation, with five of the top 20 teams in the nation at the meet, the Bates College women's cross country team took 10th place at the NESCAC championships at Bowdoin. The Bobcats defeated a Colby squad that had topped them on the same course just three weeks earlier at the State Meet.

All Bates runners at least matched their times from the State Meet, with six of the seven scorers improving, some by nearly a full minute. Sophomore Julie Dutton (Londonderry, N.H.) led the Bobcat,s finishing in 26th place with a time of 19:09, 19 seconds better than her time at the State meet. Junior Kelly Puglisi (Scotia, N.Y.) ran second once again, taking 33rd place with a time of 19:18, improving by 37 seconds. Beth Pagnotta (Hoosket, N.H.) took fourth for the Bobcats in 19:47, while rookie Catherine Creswell (Portland, Ore.), who placed 75th with a time of 20:06, showed Bates' biggest improvement, running 55 seconds better than a week before. Sophomore Jessica Gagne-Hall (Manchester, N.H.) and senior captain Rebecca Hakala (Sanford, Maine) rounded out the Bobcats' top seven. Bates' spread of 1:00 from first to fifth was its best of the season, while 1:20 from first to eighth was a significant step up headed into the ECAC and New England championships.
