YOUTHFUL BOBCATS CAPTURE TUFTS HAYSEED CLASSIC

GRAFTON, Mass. -- The Bates women's cross country team placed five runners among the top 11 finishers, including four rookies and a sophomore, to take first place in their first meet of the season at the Tufts Hayseed Classic.

The Bobcats were led by sophomore Abby Anthony (Jamestown, R.I.), who won the 5K race by almost a minute and a half. Anthony, an outdoor track All-American at 10,000-meters, picked up her first career cross country victory with a time of 18:57. The runner-up from Tufts finished in 20:25.

Right behind Anthony were a host of rookie runners who were in an impressive pack seperated by just 28 seconds. Elizabeth Pagnotta (Hooksett, N.H.), whose brother Justin runs for the men's team, placed fourth in 20:56. Alison Locke (Troy, Maine) took sixth in 21:00, while Julie Dutton (Londonderry, N.H.), whose brother Steve was a tri-captain on last year's men's team, finished eighth in 21:07. Lauren Shoff (Metamora, Ill.) rounded out the Bates scorers with a time of 21:24, good for 11th place.
