BATES WOMEN MAKE BEST SHOWING OF SEASON AT HOME
Bristol, Belanger Star

LEWISTON, Maine -- Victories in eight of 16 events helped the Bates College women's track and field team to their best finish of the season, second place at Quad Cup IV in Slovenski Track today.

Bristol won the women's 20-pound weight throw with a heave of 48 feet, 9 1/2 inches. The toss broke the school record of 48-4 1/2, previously held by Candice Poiss '92. With the victory, Bristol improved her provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Championships. She is now ranked seventh in the nation in the 20-pound weight. The school record was the second of the season for Bristol, who earlier this year broke the school mark in the shot put.

The top overall performance of the day came from sophomore jumper Anya Belanger (Milbridge, Maine), who won three events for the Bobcats. Belanger captured the high jump by two inches with a jump of 4-10 1/4; the long jump by 10 inches with a leap of 15-6 1/4; and the triple jump nearly two feet with her jump of 34-1 1/2. Belanger was also part of the winning 4-by-200-meter relay team, meaning she contributed to 36 of the Bobcats' 155 points.

Also victorious for the Bobcats were first-year sprinter Johie Farrar (West Paris, Maine) in the 200-meter dash and senior Kate Burakowski (Derry, N.H.) in the 800-meter run. Both ran anchor legs on victorious Bates relays as well, with Farrar overcoming a 25-meter deficit to win by nearly 75 in the 4x200 and Burakowski anchoring the distance medley relay.
