Bates at Middlebury, Sept.13, 1997
The Bates College (1-0) women's tennis team was victorious in its season-opening match at Middlebury (1-1), 5 matches to 4. The doubles teams of Janice Michaels (Princeton, N.J) and Laura Shearer (Concord, Mass.) and co-captains Emily Kleinman (Acton, Mass.) and Natalie Herald (North Attleboro, Mass.) won their matches 8-4 to give the Bobcats the team lead, 2-1. The top two players for the Bobcats, first-years Jen Russo (Titusville, N.J.) and Suzanne Daly (New York, N.Y.), both won their first collegiate singles matches. With the team score tied at 4, Daly and her opponent were forced to bring their match indoors tied at one set each. The third set was even at five games apiece when Daly broke serve and then held on to win the match, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. Last year, the Panthers won the match between these two teams, 8-1.

Colby-Sawyer at Bates, Sept. 20, 1997 - The Bobcats ran their record to 2-0 with a 7-2 win at Colby-Sawyer College. First-year player Jen Russo (Titusville, N.J.) had an easy time at No. 1, while classmate Suzanne Daly (New York, N.Y.) rebounded after dropping the first set 4-6 to win the next two 6-3 and 6-3. Sophomore Janice Michaels (Princeton, N.J.) won her first singles match of the season at No. 6, 6-0, 6-0.

Southern Maine at Bates, Sept. 24, 1997 - The Bobcats won their third straight match to open the season, downing the Univeristy of Southern Maine, 9-0. Bates' top two players, Jenn Russo (Titusville, N.J.) and Suzanne Daly (New York, N.Y.) kept their perfect records intact, while first-year player Emily Carleton didn't drop a game at No. 6.

Bates at Colby, Sept. 30, 1997 - Colby snapped the Bobcats' three match winning streak as coach John Illig's old team beat his new one, 7-2. The Bobcats' two wins came from junior Emily Carleton (Potomac, Md.), 6-4, 6-2, at No. 4 singles, and the team of Janice Michaels (Princeton, N.J.) and Laura Shearer (Concord, Mass.) at No. 2 doubles.

Salve Regina at Bates, Oct. 12, 1997 - In their final dual match of the fall season, the Bobcats (5-3) fell to Salve Regina, 6-3. Foour of the six singles matches went to three sets, with the Newporters winning three of those matches. First-year player Suzanne Daly (New York, N.Y.) won both of her matches, 6-0, 6-7, 6-3 in No. 2 singles and 8-2 in No. 1 doubles.
