New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament
at Amherst, Mass.

AMHERST, Mass. — Bates women's tennis had one of the top performances in school history at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament, placing 10th out of 25 teams with eight points. The Bobcats tied with Babson and Wesleyan, an NCAA tournament team last spring. Only ninth-place finishes in 1999 and 1986 are better.

The Bobcats' top performers were its most experienced doubles team, as juniors Kelsey Evans (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Talbott Randall (Norwalk, Conn.) reached the semifinals of the No. 3 doubles bracket, posting wins over opponents from Colby-Sawyer, Middlebury (to whom they had lost earlier in the week) and the fourth-seeded team from Wellesley. The matches against Colby-Sawyer and Wellesley were dominated by Evans and Randall, 8-0. Evans also scored Bates' points in the No. 2 singles bracket with a 6-0, 6-0 win over an opponent from Rhode Island College.

Bates also advanced in the No. 2 doubles bracket as first-year Tara DeVito (East Hills, N.Y.) and sophomore Kim Hoffman (Natick, Mass.) defeated opponents from Mount Holyoke and Roger Williams to reach the quarterfinals.
