Bates at University of New England, Sept.9 - The Bobcats, ranked eighth nationally in the latest NSCAA Division III poll, got off to flying start by defeating the UNE Nor'easters, 3-1. Sophomore All-American Kate O'Malley (Deephaven, Minn.) led the way, scoring two goals, one in each half. Senior co-captain Laura Stern (Newton, Mass.) had Bates' third goal late in the second half. Sophomore halfback Kara Bristow (Albuquerque, N.M.) assisted O'Malley's first goal and Stern's goal. Junior goalkeeper Susie Arnold (Falmouth, Mass.) had five saves in the victory.

Bates at Norwich, Sept. 12 - After a long bus trip, the Bates College women's soccer team were frustrated by a hot goalie and dropped a 2-1 decision to the Norwich University Cadets. The Bobcats outshot their opponents, 16-9, but only sophomore Kate O'Malley (Deephaven, Minn.) scored. The game was tied 1-1 at the half, but Norwich scored the only tally of the second.

Bates at Middlebury, Sept. 13 - In their first game of the season against a New England ranked opponent, the No. 1 Bates College Bobcats (1-2) fell to the No. 9 Middlebury College Panthers (1-0), 3-0. The Bobcats, who were 11-2-1 in the regular season, have now equaled their regular-season loss total from a year ago.

Bates at Wellesley, Sept. 17 - The Bates College women's soccer team (2-2) snapped its losing streak at two, downing Wellesley College (1-1), 1-0, in Massachusetts. After a scoreless first half, sophomore All-American Kate O'Malley (Deephaven, Minn.) scored her fourth goal of the season, unassisted just over 15 minutes into the second half. O'Malley has now scored four of Bates' five goals this season. The Bobcats were outshot, 17-15, on the day, but junior goalkeeper Susie Arnold (Falmouth, Mass.) made six saves in her first shutout of the season. The Bobcats were ranked 10th in New England headed into the game, Wellesley was No. 6 in the region.

Trinity at Bates, Sept. 20 - The Bates College (3-2) women's soccer team returned to its 1996 form with a convincing 5-0 win over Trinity (1-2). With time winding down on a scoreless first half, sophomores Kelly Heath (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Kate O'Malley (Deephaven, Minn.) scored a minute apart in the final five minutes. After assisting O'malley's goal, junior Colleen McCrave (Walpole, Mass.) added two goals of her wn in the second half.

Tufts at Bates, Sept. 27 - The No. 7 Bobcats (3-3) missed a golden chance to climb in the New England polls today, falling to No. 3 Tufts (5-1), 2-0. The Bobcats have now matched their loss total from a year ago. Tufts proved opportunistic twice, capitalizing on a pair of Bates mistakes, one in the first 10 minutes of the game, the other midway through the second.

Babson at Bates, Sept. 28 - Coach Jim Murphy's women's soccer team (4-3) bounced back from a loss to Tufts the day before to down Babson College (4-4), 3-1. The Bobcats got on the board first just over 25 minutes in when sophomore Katie Dodson (Westford, Mass.) capitalized on a loose ball in front of the net from the foot of junior Colleen McCrave (Walpole, Mass.). Babson evened the score five minutes later. Twelve minutes into the second half, the high-scoring tandem of McCrave and sophomore Kate O'Malley (Deephaven, Minn.) connected for the third tim this season on a perfectly executed two-on-one break. Bates iced the game with 15 minutes go when first-year player Lisa Waldron (hanover, Mass.) redirected a shot by classmate Katy Uhlmansiek (Woodinville, Wash.), each scoring their first career points. The win was the Bobcats' 14th in 15 lifetime meetings with Babson.

Bates at Williams, Oct. 4 - The Bobcats (4-4) fell victim to bad luck in Williamstown, knocking two shots off the post and another the crossbar, but the host Ephs (5-1-1) were the only ones to score, taking the 1-0 decision and avenging their only loss from the year before. Junior goalkeeper Susie Arnold (Falmouth, Mass.) made seven saves, many of them difficult, in the losing effort.

Gordon at Bates, Oct. 9 - The Bobcats (5-4) escaped with a 2-1 win today over the visiting Gordon College Scots (5-5-1). In an even first half, the Bobcats got the scoring started on an unassisted goal by sophomore Kelly Heath (Albuquerque, N.M.). Gordon tied the game with less than ten second left in the half. The Bobcats scored the only goal of the seconjust over 10 minutes in when senior cocaptain Laura Stern (Newton Highlands, Mass.) notched her second goal of the season and her career, taking a pass from first-year midfielder Val Rosenberg (Oakland, N.J.) and rocketing to the opposite corner from 30 yards out.

Bates at Connecticut College, Oct. 18 - With a pair of late goals, the Bobcats (6-4) avenged one of their two regular season losses from last season, defeating Connecticut College (7-4), 2-0, in a battle of top-ten teams. Bates is seventh in New England, while the Camels are sixth in the Metro region. Junior Julie Lundman (Worthington, Ohio) gave the Bobcats the lead with just 10 minutes remaining in the game with her first goal of the season on an assist by sophomore Katie Dodson (Westford, Mass.), while first-year fullback Lisa Waldron (Hanover, Mass.) notched her second of the season with three minutes left in the game. Lundman and the Bobcats were impressive on defense as well shutting down the leading scorer in NESCAC, while allowing just four shots in the second half. Goalkeeper Suzie Arnold (Falmouth, Mass.) had six saves for her second shutout of the season.

UMaine-Farmington at Bates, Oct. 22 - Sophomore forward Kate O'Malley (Deephaven, Minn.) recorded her third career hat trick as the Bobcats (7-4) cruised over the Maine-Farmington Beavers (6-5-1), 4-1. O'Malley scored once in the first half in the 14th minute of play, and twice in the second. Junior forward Colleen McCrave (Walpole, Mass.) had the Bobcats' other goal, midway through the first half. She also assisted O'Malley's third goal, the fourth time this season the duo have connected for a goal. The other assists went to first-year midfielders Val Rosenberg (Oakland, N.J.) and Lisa Waldron (Westford, Mass.). The Bobcats are ranked sixth in New England headed into this weekend's CBB showdown at Colby.

Bates at Colby, Oct. 25 - In a disappointing performance, coach Jim Murphy's women's soccer team (7-5) lost, 2-0, to Colby (6-6), despite dominating much of the play and an outstanding performance from junior goalkeeper Susie Arnold (Falmouth, Mass.). The White Mules scored once in each half, off a direct kick in the first and off a corner kick in the second.

Southern Maine at Bates, Oct. 28 - Coach Jim Murphy's women's soccer team (8-5) took the frustrations of a loss in their CBB opener out on the University of Southern Maine Huskies (5-8-3) with a 6-1 win. Three of the team's sophomores each had a goal and an assist for the Bobcats, sophomore midfielder Jolene Thurston (Post Mills, Vt.) forward Anne Valentine (Framingham, Mass.) and midfielder Katie Dodson (Westford, Mass.). Junior forward Colleen McCrave picked up her team-leading fifth and sixth assists on the season, while sophomore Kate O'Malley's (Deephaven, Minn.) ninth goal of the season moved her into fourth place on Bates' all-time women's soccer scoring list with 63 points, one more than Jen Tiner '95. The Bobcats cloe out the regular season at Bowdoin on Saturday. A win would clinch a three-way tie for the CBB title.

Bates at Bowdoin, Nov. 1   - The Bobcats (9-5), ranked ninth in New England, drastically improved their chances of returning the NCAA tournament with a 3-1 win over the second-ranked Bowdoin Polar Bears (10-3-1). The Bobcats got goals from first-year player Lisa Waldron (Hanover, Mass.) and sophomores Jolene Thurston (Post Mills, Vt.) and Katie Dodson (Weston, Mass.), while sophomore Kate O'Malley (Deephaven, Minn.) had a pair of assists. Waldron scored the first goal 20 minutes into the first half and then assisted Thurston seven minutes later. The Bobcats earn a three-way tie for the CBB title. NCAA selection is on Nov. 2, while ECACs are the next day.

NCAA Tournament First Round - Colby at Bates, Nov. 5 - LATE GOAL BY SZUM GIVES COLBY 1-0 WIN IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

LEWISTON, Maine Ð With 6:09 remaining in the second overtime period, first
year forward Carolyn Szum (Amherst, N.H.) came away from a scramble in
front of the net with the ball and knocked it home to give the Colby
College White Mules (9-5) a 1-0 double overtime win over the Bates College
Bobcats (9-6).
	Colby got the ball on an indirect kick deep in the Bates zone and
sent it across the goal mouth. Junior midfielder Caitlin Sculley
(Wakefield, Mass.) redirected the ball to the front of the net, where Szum
was able to knock it home. The Bobcats had several chances in regulation,
once hitting the crossbar and another time putting the ball just wide. 
	The win was Colby's first-ever in NCAA play in any sport. The
Mules next take on Plymouth State College (15-2) on Saturday, Nov. 8 at
10:30 a.m. in Plymouth, N.H.
