The Bates College women's soccer team (1-0) began their quest for a third consecutive NCAA Tournament bid with a 2-1 victory over the Norwich University Cadets (2-3). The Bobcats got on the board first in the first half when junior All-America forward Kate O'Malley (Deephaven, Minn.) settled a ball in front of the net and blasted it home for her 28th career goal. Senior tri-captain Colleen McCrave (Walpole, Mass.) had the assist.
Norwich tied the game with 27 remaining in the game when senior forward Julie-Ann Robert (Lewiston, Maine) sent a pass ahead to senior forward Megan Curran (Exeter, N.H.) who sent the ball to the far corner. Bates retook the lead eight minutes later when O'Malley scored her second goal of the game for her seventh career multi-goal game. First-year forward Amanda Waterhouse (Cumberland, Maine) assisted, picking up her first collegiate point.
Bates goalkeeper Suzie Arnold (Falmouth, Mass.) made three saves for the win, while Norwich keeper Alex Evans (Norfolk, Conn.) had 17 stops in the losing effort. Bates outshot the Cadets, 28-6. The Bobcats next face Wellesley College at home on Sept. 16.
