WHEATON WOMEN'S SOCCER EDGES BATES IN ECAC QUARTFINALS, 1-0, IN OVERTIME

(Taken from a Wheaton College Press release)

NORTON, Mass. -- The top-seeded Wheaton College women's soccer team needed an extra period to outlast No. 8 Bates College, 1-0, today in the first round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Championships. The Lyons advance to face New England Women's And Men's Atheltic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Clark University at home in the semifinals.

With today's victory, Wheaton improved to 21-2, while the Bobcats dropped to 8-6-1.

The two squads played tight defense in regulation, ending the first 90 minutes of play scoreless. With two minutes remaining in the first sudden-death overtime period, sophomore Julie Hickey (Weymouth, Mass.) lofted the game-winning shot over the outstretched arms of Bates first-year goalkeeper Kim Martell (Needham, Mass.). Junior Chrissy Chase (Weymouth, Mass.) delivered a free kick that Hickey headed past Martell. It was knocked out of the goal by a Bates defender right back to Hickey, who blasted it home.

Wheaton goalkeeper Emily Boeing (Lincoln, Mass.) recorded her 16th shutout of the season, posting seven saves. Martell had four stops in the losing effort. Wheaton outshot the Bobcats, 12-11.
