BATES TOPS SIMMONS, 4-0, ON O'MALLEY HAT TRICK

BOSTON, Mass. -- The Bates College women's soccer team, led by three goals from senior forward Kate O'Malley (Deephaven, Minn.), defeated the host Simmons College Sharks, 4-0, in a night game tonight.

After first-year forward Melissa Ostuni (Lynnfield, Mass.) got the Bobcats (3-2) on the board within the first five minutes of the game, O'Malley took over the game, recording her fourth career hat trick and the 14th multi-goal game of her career. She scored twice in the first half and once in the second, with first-year players Ostuni, Shannon McCumber (Littleton, Mass.) and Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) each notching assists. O'Malley, who notched her 44th career goal and 107th career point in the win, moved closer to all-time leading scorer Bethany Maitland '89 (49 G-17 A-115 P).

Bates goalkeeper Kim Martell (Needham, Mass.) recorded her first career shutout in the win, making six saves. Simmons goalie Erin McElhinney made 12 stops in the losing effort.
