BATES STOPS MIDDLEBURY IN OVERTIME, 2-1

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- First-year forward Shannon McCumber (Littleton, Mass.) scored her first career goal three minutes into overtime as the Bates College women's soccer team defeated the Middlebury College Panthers, 2-1.

McCumber's game-winner was set up from a feed by senior Kate O'Malley that allowed the rookie to take Middlebury goalkeeper Ali Connolly one-on-one.

Bates took the lead in the game when sophomore forward Amanda Waterhouse (Cumberland, Maine) intercepted a pass and converted the failed clear from 15 yards away just two and a half minutes into the contest. Middlebury scored the equalizer when Caitlin Ryan headed the ball past Bates first-year keeper Kim Martell (Needham, Mass.) with seven minutes remaining in the first half. The game was scoreless until McCumber scored the winner in overtime. Martell and Connolly each had seven saves in the contest. (Taken from a Middlebury College press release)
