BATES RECORDS FIFTH STRAIGHT SHUTOUT, 1-0, OVER TUFTS
Bobcat defense sets school record

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College women's soccer team's defense set a school record by recording their fifth straight shutout as the Bobcats (7-1, 3-1 NESCAC) defeated the Tufts University Jumbos (4-3, 3-2 NESCAC) in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action today.

Junior midfielder Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) scored the game's only goal with just under 20 minutes remaining in regulation. Whiting beat a Tufts defender and sent a ball past Jumbo goalkeeper Mara Schanfield (St. Paul, Minn.) in the top right corner of the net.

Bates junior goalkeeper Kim Martell (Needham, Mass.) made six saves and recorded her seventh shutout of the season. The Bobcats have only been scored upon in one game this season. Senior Alicia Dermody (Marblehead, Mass.) and sophomore Catherine Crosby (Lincoln, Mass.) also anchor the Bates backfield. The five-game shutout string surpasses four-game streaks in 1994 and 1987.
