MIDDLEBURY ADVANCES TO NESCAC SEMIS, 2-1, OVER TRINITY
LEWISTON, Maine -- Two first half goals by Middlebury College junior Meg Bonney (Norwich, Vt.) were enough to lift the Panthers to a 2-1 victory over the Trinity College Bantams in the first round of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's soccer tournament.
Middlebury (11-4), the No. 2 seed, got on the board in the 15th minute when junior Britt Kittleson (Minneapolis, Minn.) took a shot that hit the crossbar and went straight to Bonney. Trinity had a chance to tie the score 12 minutes later, but a penalty kick by rookie Micole Mauger (E. Bridgewater, Mass.) went wide of the net. Bonney doubled the lead in the 37th minute when she collected the ball 10 yards outside the box and fired it over the head of Bantam keeper Brenna Shields (Cutchogue, N.Y.).
No. 7 Trinity (7-8) picked up its play in the second half, cutting into the lead when sophomore Kate Salottolo (Bethel, Conn.) found Mauger open in front of the Middlebury net in the 72nd minute. The Bantams had a few other chances in the final 15 minutes, but were unable to score an equalizer.
Shields made 11 saves in net for Trinity, while Ali Connolly (Marblehead, Mass.) had four stops for the Panthers. With the win, Middlebury advances to the NESCAC semifinals at Williams on Oct. 27.
