WOMEN'S SOCCER TAKES CBB OPENER, 4-3, OVER COLBY

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Four different Bates College women's soccer players scored goals as the Bobcats (9-2, 4-2 NESCAC) won for the first time when they allowed a goal, defeating the host Colby College White Mules (5-4-1, 2-4-1 NESCAC), 4-3, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and Colby-Bates-Bowdoin (CBB) contest today.

Colby got on the board first in the 20th minute when all-time leading scorer Christine O'Donnell (Salem, Mass.) took advantage of a Bates defensive breakdown to beat Bates keeper Kim Martell (Needham, Mass.). The Bobcats got an equalizer in the 31st minute when junior Melissa Ostuni (Lynnefield, Mass.) beat the keeper on a nice pass from senior Kate Dockery (New York, N.Y.). Colby kept pressure on Martell late in the first half and scored the go-ahead goal off a corner kick on a blast from 25 yards out by junior forward Stacy Thurston (Post Mills, Vt.).

Bates wasted no time in the second half to tie the score again as sophomore back Catherine Crosby (Lincoln, Mass.) scored on a free kick just from inside the 18-yard line just 44 seconds after the break. Bates took their first lead of the game seven minutes later on a goal by junior midfielder Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) the beat Colby goalie Abby Kussell (Weston, Mass.) low inside the far post. The Bobcats tacked on an insurance goal in the 61st minute as Crosby chipped the ball over the defense and senior forward Amanda Waterhouse (Cumberland, Maine) chased it down and beat Kussell. Bates would need the extra tally as Colby's Stephanie Hicks (Framingham, Mass.), who assisted Thurston's goal, put a shot high over Martell's arms from 20 yards out. The Bobcats withstood a furious Colby rally in final five minutes to take their fourth NESCAC win of the season.

Martell made nine saves in the win, while Kussell had 10 before being replaced by first-year keeper Elizabeth Riley (Saco, Maine), who had one save.
