EARLY FLURRY LEADS BOWDOIN PAST BATES, 3-0,
LEWISTON, Maine -- Two goals in the first 11 minutes of the game gave the visiting Bowdoin College women's soccer team early momentum that helped secure the Polar Bears a 3-0 win over the host Bates College Bobcats in the first round of the New England Small College Athletic Conference women's soccer tournament today.
Bowdoin (11-3-1), the fourth seed, opened the scoring in the 5th minute when rookie forward Rachael Gordon (Wayland, Mass.) beat her defender one-on-one and shot into the lower left corner of the net. The Polar Bears extended the lead at the 10:58 mark when sophomore Michal Shapiro (Newton, Mass.) headed a pass from junior Shelly Chessie (Fredrickton, N.B.) past Bates junior goalkeeper Kim Martell (Needham, Mass.). Sophomore Jill Fallwell (Arlington, Mass.) closed out the scoring in the 23rd minute when she took a nice feed from rookie Cedar Goldman (Newton, Mass.) and beat Martell low to the far side.
No. 5 seed Bates (10-4-1) got five saves from Martell and four from reserve Lynne Antinarelli (Bedford, Mass.), while Bowdoin senior Emily Rizza (Pennington, N.J.) picked up her seventh shutout of the season with five saves. Bowdoin advances to the NESCAC tournament semifinals, where they will face top-seed Williams College in Williamstown next Saturday.
