BATES DROPS NESCAC OPENER, 2-0, AT AMHERST

AMHERST, Mass. -- Senior Amherst College women's soccer tri-captain Cathy Poor (Harwich Port, Mass.) netted her second goal in as many games in the sixth minute, and fellow tri-captain Hallison Putnam (Lexington, Ky.) posted six saves in her first-ever game as a goalkeeper, as the Lord Jeffs defeated visiting Bates College, 2-0, in the Bobcats' NESCAC opener.

After a touching pre-game ceremony with all six of the Amherst and Bates men's and women's soccer and field hockey teams, the Jeffs mounted several early scoring chances on junior Bates goalkeeper Kim Martell (Needham, Mass.) culminating in Poor's sixth minute goal on a deflected shot from senior striker Heather Govern (Beverly, Mass.). Martell made several keys saves to keep it a one-goal contest at halftime.

In the second half, the Bobcats put together some offensive momentum, threatening Putnam, who was starting her first career game as a goalie with junior starter Brooke Diamond (Longmeadow, Mass.) out with mononucleosis. Amherst first-year Tracy Montigny (East Granby, Conn) sealed the game in the 66th minute, with a pretty juke move to isolate herself at the top-left corner of the penalty box, blasting a right-footed shot into the top-right corner of the net. Martell made six saves in the effort, as did Putnam.
