Bobcats To Host Amherst In Finals Sunday at 1 p.m.
LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College junior forward Amanda Waterhouse (Cumberland, Maine) scored her third goal of the tournament as the second-seeded Bobcats advanced to the finals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England championships with a 1-0 win over No. 6 Williams College today.
Waterhouse scored her goal at the 19:01 mark of the game, taking a pass from All-NESCAC midfielder Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) at the edge of the goalie box and chipping it over the head of Williams goalkeeper Abi Jackson (Jamaica Plain, Mass.). The Ephs had a few good chances to score an equalizer, with their best coming in the 69th minute of the game, but Bates junior back Alicia Dermody (Marblehead, Mass.) cleared away a free ball headed towards the net.
Bates goalkeeper Kim Martell (Needham, Mass.) made three saves for her fifth shutout of the season, picking up her second win over Williams this season. Jackson had five stops in the losing effort for the Ephs, who end the season at 11-7.
The Bobcats improve to 12-5 with the victory and advance to the finals of the ECAC tournament for the second time in three years. They will play host to fifth-seeded Amherst College, who upset No. 1 Wellesley in penalty kicks, 4-3, after the two teams played to a scoreless tie after 120 minutes. Game time for Sunday's contest is 1 p.m.
