BATES TOPS SOUTHERN MAINE, 2-1, ON CRAWFORD GOAL

GORHAM, Maine -- Rookie forward Kristy Crawford (Derry, N.H.) scored in the 56th minute to break a 1-1 tie and the Bates College Bobcats (3-0-0, No. 6 in New England) went on to post a 2-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies (6-2-0, No. 11) in a non-conference women's college soccer match Tuesday afternoon in Gorham.

Crawford scored the game winner when she collected the ball on the left side, beat a defender to the line and slipped a low shot just inside the far post past USM senior goalkeeper Samantha Whitman (Saxtons River, Vt.).

Southern Maine had tied the game four minutes earlier as senior Ali Hathaway (Hampden, Maine) took a long pass out of the back and pushed up field on a quick counter. She dished a pass to senior Michele Dufour (Madawaska, Maine) who put a well-placed shot from 20 yards out past Bates sophomore keeper Kim Martell (Needham, Mass.). The goal was the first allowed by Martell in 220 minutes this season.

The Bobcats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as junior midfielder Kate Dockery (New York, N.Y.) scored the only goal of the first half in the eighth minute. Sophomore Julie Asen (Fairfield, Conn.) took a short clearing kick and put a through pass between defenders to Dockery whose shot to the far post eluded the charging Whitman for her second goal of the season. Dockery has had a goal or an assist in all three Bates games this season.

Martell finished the match with three saves for Bates. Whitman was credited with seven saves. Bates held a slim 14-13 edge in shots.

Southern Maine plays at Keene State in a Little East Conference match on Saturday. Bates travels to Trinity (Conn.) and Middlebury this weekend for a pair of NESCAC matches.
