BATES DROPS NESCAC FIRST ROUND MATCH-UP TO TUFTS, 3-0

(Taken from a Tufts University press release)

MEDFORD, Mass. -- Senior tri-captain Sara Yeatman (Santa Monica, Calif.) scored two goals and had an assist to lead the host Tufts University Jumbos to a 3-0 victory over the Bates College Bobcats in the first round of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Women's Soccer Tournament on Tuesday afternoon.

Tufts (13-2), the third seed, advances to the semi-finals to play second seed Bowdoin (13-1-1) at Middlebury on Saturday (Oct. 28). Middlebury will play the Amherst-Williams quarterfinal winner in the other semi-final.

The Jumbos controlled the first half against fifth-seed Bates (10-5). They scored twice within four minutes in the first 15 minutes of the game. Yeatman turned and fired from 25 yards out at 9:55 for a 1-0 Tufts lead. She then served the ball to the front of the net from close range and junior Becky Mann (Ridgefield, Conn.) finished at 13:24 for a 2-0 margin. The Jumbos pushed the lead to 3-0 late in the half when Yeatman converted a corner kick by junior Katie Kehrberger (Waldwick, N.J.) at 37:0-5. The second half was scoreless.

Bates sophomore keeper Kim Martell (Needham, Mass.) started and made nine saves. She was relieved at halftime by rookie Lynn Antinarelli (Bedford, Mass.), who stopped seven shots. Bates had better chances in the second half, including a shot by freshman Lindsay Harvey (Winchester, Mass.) that just skidded right of the goal in the 80th minute. The shutout was only the second suffered by the Bobcats all season, with the other also coming at the hands of Tufts on Oct. 1.
