WOMEN'S SOCCER SUFFERS FIRST LOSS, 3-1, AT MIDDLEBURY

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The Bates College women's soccer team (4-1, 2-1 NESCAC) suffered its first loss of the 2000 season today, dropping a 3-1 decision at Middlebury (5-1, 3-1 NESCAC) in a battle of the No. 6 and No. 4 teams in New England.

The Panthers got all their scoring in the final 15 minutes of the first half, when senior Meg Bonney scored three goals in an eight minute span after entering the game as a substitute. Bates' pressure late in the game produced one goal by rookie Rebekah Friedman (Port Washington, N.Y.) on an assist from junior Amanda Waterhouse (Cumberland, Maine), but it was not enough for the Bobcats to improve to 5-0. Kim Martell (Needham, Mass.) made eight saves in goal for Bates, while Ali Connolly had four stops for the Panthers.
