COLBY UPENDS BATES, 2-1, IN CBB WOMEN'S SOCCER OPENER

LEWISTON, Maine -- In the first leg of the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin women's soccer rivalry, the Colby College White Mules (7-4, 4-3 NESCAC, No. 11 in New England) defeated the host Bates College Bobcats (7-3, 3-3 NESCAC, No. 7 in New England) by a 2-1 count.

Colby scored the first goal of the game early, when junior midfielder Elizabeth Rice (Norfolk, Va.) found senior forward Carolyn Szum (Amherst, N.H.) open inside the Bates 18-yard line. Szum calmly deposited the ball past Bates keeper Kim Martell (Needham, Mass.) to give the White Mules the lead in the fourth minute. Colby extended its lead in the 36th minute when sophomore Christine O'Donnell (Salem, Mass.) picked off a Bates clearing pass and sent it home from the top of the box.

The Bobcats cut the lead in half just over 25 minutes into the second stanza when Bates rookie back Catherine Crosby (Lincoln, Mass.) sent a rising shot home from the 18 to the upper left corner of the net. Bates had a couple other fine opportunities, but Colby sophomore keeper Emily Possner (Southfield, Mich.) was strong in goal, making nine saves for the win. Bates' Martell made six saves in the losing effort.

Bates is next in action at 11 a.m. on Saturday against NESCAC foe Wesleyan, while Colby plays host to Middlebury, the No. 12 team in the nation at the same time in Waterville.
