NO. 1 MIDDLEBURY TOPS BATES, 17-4

LEWISTON, Maine — Eleven different Middlebury players scored goals today as the Panthers completed an undefeated regular season with a 17-4 win over the host Bates College Bobcats.

Middlebury (12-0, 9-0 NESCAC) earned the top seed in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) tournament and will host the semifinals and final next weekend. Despite the loss Bates (7-6, 3-6 NESCAC) garnered the sixth seed in the tournament and will play at No. 3 Williams on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Bobcats defeated the Ephs, 12-10 in overtime, earlier this season.

In today's game, the Panthers scored the first 12 goals of the contest, three coming from senior midfielder Julia Bergofsky (Exeter, N.H.), a game-high performance. Bates broke onto the scoreboard with 10 seconds left in the first half on a goal by sophomore Becky Castle (Stonington, Conn.). The Panthers also received two-goal games from four players: sophomore Nuala O'Donohoe (Needham, Mass.) and juniors Meg Bonney (Norwich, Vt.), Dalton Cox (Guilford, Conn.) and Liv Eilson (Bedford, N.Y.). Bates got two goals from sophomore Staci Bafford (Severna Park, Md.)
