SECOND HALF BURST LEADS NO. 19 BATES
PAST CONNECTICUT COLLEGE, 14-7

LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College women's lacrosse team broke a 6-6 tie by scoring three goals in a 52-second span and cruising from there as the Bobcats defeated Connecticut College, 14-7, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) showdown today.

Bates (5-2, 2-2 NESCAC) led 6-5 at halftime, but Conn. College tied the game just over three minutes into the second period on a goal by senior Anna Trafton (Topsham, Maine). Bates first-year midfielder Erica Nason (Concord, N.H.) scored on a free-position shot at the 35:28 mark of the contest to give the Bobcats the lead for good. Senior Liz Coulson (Devon, Pa.) won a draw control and Bates went up 8-6 when she assisted sophomore Lori Jessup (Hatboro, Pa.) just eight seconds later. Coulson's free position goal 44 seconds after that gave the Bobcats an insurmountable lead.

Conn. College (2-5, 0-5 NESCAC) jumped to an early lead when junior Caley Boyd (New Canaan, Conn.) scored just 1:06 seconds into the contest and sophomore Emliy Stieff (Baltimore, Md.) tallied 1:31 later. Coulson scored two goals 10 seconds apart in the that sparked a 4-0 run by the Bobcats. The Camels answered with a 3-0 run of their own, taking a 5-4 lead, their last of the game, on Boyd's second goal of the contest five minutes before the break. Coulson evened the game with less than two minutes left in the first stanza. Junior Liz Lawler (Dublin, N.H.) scored with 30 seconds on the clock and Bates would not trail again.

Coulson scored a career-high six goals and seven points to lead the Bobcats, while sophomore Carrie Smith (Chevy Chase, Md.) led all players with five assists. Trafton led the Camels with two goals and an assist for three points. Bates senior goalkeeper Jen Strahle (Ridgewood, N.J.) made 12 saves for the victory, while Conn. College rookie Paige Diamond (Longmeadow, Mass.) had 11 stops in the losing effort.
