BATES WOMEN CRUISE PAST BRIDGEWATER STATE, 25-1

LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College women's lacrosse team earned their first victory of the season today with a 25-1 defeat of the visiting Bridgewater State College Bears. The Bobcats allowed their lowest goal total since 1995.

Bates (1-1) was paced by a career-high six goals and eight points by sophomore midfielder Carrie Smith (Chevy Chase, Md.). Smith scored the first three goals of the contest in 2:57. Sophomore attack Lori Jessup (Hatboro, Pa.) added a career-high five points (3G, 2A), while classmate Becky Castle (Stonington, Conn.) had four goals, also a career-best. Junior Liz Lawler (Dublin, N.H.) had three goals and an assist and senior Liz Coulson (Devon, Pa.) and junior Staci Bafford (Severna Park, Md.) had two goals and two assists each.

Bridgewater State (0-2) had a goal by junior Katie Kenney (Westwood, Mass.) on an assist by classmate Paula Habel (Hingham, Mass.) midway through the second half for the Bears' only score. Sophomore Danielle Bean (Bethel, Vt.) made six saves on the afternoon.

Bates next plays Tuesday at 4 p.m. against Southern Maine, while Bridgewater State travels to Salve Regina on Thursday.
