TUFTS UPSETS #20 BATES, 15-8

LEWISTON, Maine — Four different Tufts University players scored at least three goals as the visiting Jumbos defeated the Bates College Bobcats, ranked 20th in the most recent IWLCA poll, by a score of 15-8 in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's lacrosse action today.

Tufts (6-5, 2-5 NESCAC) used a strong first half to open up a 5-2 lead at the break. The Jumbos scored just 12 seconds into the second half to open up a four-goal advantage on a score by junior Christina Orf (Lexington, Mass.). Bates (9-4, 3-4 NESCAC) answered two minutes later on a tally by rookie Lori Jessup (Hatboro, Pa.) to cut the lead to 6-3. Tufts rattled off five unanswered goals over the next 10 minutes to claim an 11-3 lead. Bates got as close as six goals at 13-7 on rookie Becky Castle's (Stonington, Conn.) goal with 8:19 on the clock, but the Bobcats could get no closer.

Jumbo senior Katie Richardson (Monroe, Conn.) had a game-high four goals and an assist, making her one of three tufts players with five points in the contest. Orf and senior Jen Gregorian (Wayland, Mass.) each scored three goals and had two assists, while junior Liz Horowitz (Westbury, N.Y.) also notched a hat trick. Bates' Castle and senior Erin Flynn (Newton, N.J.) each had two-goal games for the Bobcats, while rookie Catherine Crosby (Lincoln, Mass.) added two assists.

Bates junior Liz Coulson (Devon, Pa.) made 15 saves in goal in the losing effort, while Tufts sophomore Ari Kristan (So. Windsor, Conn.) had 12 stops.
