SECOND HALF SURGE LEADS BATES PAST TRINITY, 13-9
Bobcats match best start since 1995

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.— In their biggest test of the 2001 season to date, the Bates College women's lacrosse team overcame a three-goal halftime deficit to defeat Trinity College, 13-9, on a neutral site game played at MIT today. The win is Bates' fifth straight to start the season, matching the team's longest season-opening winning streak since 1995.

Bates (5-0) earned the win by forcing 31 Bantam turnovers in the contest, most coming in the second half. Trinity (3-3) jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the first seven minutes of the contest and took a 7-4 lead at the break.

The Bobcats scored five of the first six goals of the second half, taking an 9-8 lead on an unassisted goal by senior co-captain Jenn Sall (Gladwyne, Pa.) eight minutes in. After a 12 minute scoreless stretch, Trinity tied the contest, 9-9, with 9:24 remaining on a goal by junior Ashley Taylor (Washington, D.C.), but the Bobcats reclaimed the lead for good just over 30 seconds later when sophomore Liz Lawler (Dublin, N.H.) scored the game winner on a feed from rookie midfielder Catherine Crosby (Lincoln, Mass.) at the 8:53.

Bates was led by senior co-captain Erin Flynn (Newton, N.J.), who scored four goals and had one assist for five points. Sall and Lawler each contributed three goals, with Lawler scoring three of Bates final four tallies. Junior goalkeeper Liz Coulson (Devon, Pa.) made six saves in her first career start in the nets. The win was Bates' first over Trinity since 1994, while the Bobcats picked up their first NESCAC win under head coach Wynn Hohlt.

Trinity's Taylor led all scorers with four goals and two assists for six points. Senior attack Melissa Marlette (Buffalo, N.Y.) was the Bantams' only other multi-goal scorer with two goals and an assist. Junior K.J. Burnett (Pennington, NJ) had 16 saves in goal for the Bantams.
