BATES FALLS TO #1 MIDDLEBURY, 17-6

MIDDLEBURY, Vt.(taken from a Middlebury College press release)— The host Middlebury College Panthers (11-0, 9-0 NESCAC) maintained their undefeated season with a 17-6 win over the Bates College Bobcats (9-6, 3-6 NESCAC) in both teams' regular season finale on the Kohn Turf Field in Middlebury. The Panthers will draw a first-round bye and host the NESCAC semifinals and championship on May 5th and 6th in Middlebury. With wins by Tufts over Connecticut College and Trinity over Bowdoin, Bates has clinched the sixth seed in the tournament, with their opponent to be determined..

In today's contest, Betsy Wheeler exploded for six goals and three assists as Middlebury jumped out to an 8-1 lead and never looked back on their way to the win over Bates. Leading 10-2 at the half, the Panthers and Bobcats exchanged the first six goals of the second half before Middlebury scored three straight to take a commanding 16-5 lead with 14:27 left to play. There was little scoring in the final 14:27 as Middlebury picked up the 17-6 win. Char Glessner, Nuala O'Donohoe and Kristin Hanley had three goals apiece for Middlebury to go along with Wheeler's six. Becky Castle (Stonington, Conn.) led Bates with a pair of goals.
