COLBY WOMEN DOWN NO. 20 BATES, 15-12

LEWISTON, Maine — The visiting Colby College women's lacrosse team scored six unanswered goals to end the game and upset the host Bates College Bobcats, ranked 20th in the most recent IWLCA Division III national poll, 15-12, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) contest today.

Neither team established momentum in the first half, with the largest margin two goals when Bates (6-2, 2-2 NESCAC) went up 2-0 and 4-2. Colby (1-3, 1-3 NESCAC) grabbed its first lead of the game at 6-5 on a tally by sophomore Amanda Epstein (Philadelphia, Pa.). Bates senior tri-captain Erin Flynn (Newton, N.J.) responded with two goals in a 37 second span to put the Bobcats back up, 7-6, on a feed from rookie Carrie Smith (Chevy Chase, Md.) with 4:57 left, but Colby senior Angela Pappas (Gwynedd Valley, Pa.) knotted the game at 7-7 two minutes later.

Bates scored four of the first five goals of the second half to claim their largest lead of the contest, 11-8, on a goal by sophomore Liz Lawler (Dublin, N.H.) with 17:23 left in the game. White Mule sophomore Allyson King (W. Hartford, Conn.) scored 40 seconds later, but Bates' Kathrene Tiffany (Boston, Mass.) returned the margin to three goals on a rebound just 20 seconds later at 16:21. Colby then went on the decisive 6-0 run as sophomore Lauren Gremelspacher (Granby, Conn.) scored on a free position shot with 4:24 on the clock to give the White Mules a 13-12 lead. Colby scored twice more in the final minute of play to ice the contest.

Bates' Flynn led all scorers with five goals on the evening, while Colby's Pappas also had five points on three goals and two assists. King added four goals for the Mules, while Lawler and Becky Castle (Stonington, Conn.) had a pair of assists for Bates. Liz Coulson (Devon, Pa.) made nine saves for the Bobcats in a losing effort, while Colby sophomore keeper Anna Schierberl Scherr (Portsmouth, NH) had seven stops.
